What is the Difference Between Cyclops IS and ExP and how do I choose the right model?

The Cyclops IS and Cyclops ExP are the same product, but are designed and certified with different protection methods. The following information will help you to identify which product to use with your setup.

Overview

CycloPS IS

The Cyclops IS is certified as Intrinsically Safe (IS), which means that it is designed to be low energy with limited capacitance so that it will not ignite gas.

It is certified so that it can be installed in:

  • Zone 0/Div 1
  • Zone 2/Div 2

When to select Cyclops IS:

  • The control system and wellhead are in the same hazardous area

Cyclops ExP

The Cyclops ExP is certified as Explosion Proof or Flameproof, which means that is is designed to contain an explosion or fire in the case of a failure.

It is certified so that it can be installed in:

  • Zone 1/Div 1
  • Zone 2/Div 2

When to select Cyclops ExP:

  • Your operational process uses explosion proof sensors
  • The control system and wellhead are in different hazardous areas and you don’t want to use an intrinsic safety barrier to cross the boundary

Intrinsic Safety Barrier

An intrinsic safety barrier is an electrical protection device that is installed in a control panel in the general purpose or Zone 2/Div 2 area. It is used to limit the voltage and current on connections that are run into a more hazardous area such as Zone 0/Zone 1/Div 1.

Wiring Across Zone Boundaries

If the control system is in a less hazardous area (Zone 2 or Div 2) and the well head is considered a more hazardous (Zone 0/1 or Div 1), you must either:

  • Use the Cyclops IS with an intrinsic safety barrier
  • Use the Cyclops ExP

When crossing zone/div boundaries you may need to seal the cable ends to prevent gas from travelling from the more hazardous area to the less hazardous area. Check with your local electrical code.
