The Cyclops uses Geomagnetic Sensing to monitor the Earth’s magnetic field as the plunger arrives.
Mounting Location
The Cyclops can be mounted in a variety of locations. Unlike coil based sensors, the plunger does not have to completely move by the sensor, nor does it have to be travelling at a minimum speed.
Ferrous Plungers
When using plungers that have at least some ferrous content, the Cyclops will start to see the Earth’s magnetic field bend even before it reaches the sensor. For these types of plungers, you can choose to mount the Cyclops where the plunger rests or anywhere else on the lubricator that is convenient.
Non-Ferrous Plungers
Non-ferrous plungers such as stainless steel, titanium, and aluminum are invisible to the Cyclops as they do not affect the Earth’s magnetic field. To detect these plungers, the Cyclops must see a change due to the movement of other wellhead components such as the anvil and spring.
Orientation
The Cyclops is designed to be mounted such that the cable port aligns with the lubricator. This ensures that the magnetic sensor is aligned to detect movement in the vertical direction.
The Cyclops can be flipped 180 degrees as the sensor only looks at the magnitude of the signal, not the direction of travel.
Securing the Cyclops
The Cyclops must not move when the plunger arrives. Use the provided band clamp(s) to securely fasten the Cyclops to the lubricator. The Cyclops IS has built in mounting legs while the Cyclops ExP is mounted using band clamps across the built in cable ports.
